Too high Calcium/Phosphorus ratio

The ration contains a surplus of calcium relative to phosphorus, although the absolute amounts of calcium may be acceptable. Diseases in the skeleton may develop if a ration with an unbalanced Ca/P ratio is given for prolonged periods.

Solutions:

Provide less of feeds with a high calcium content like alfalfa and calcium carbonate. Increase the proportion of phosphorus rich feeds like wheat bran and grains in the diet. Be sure that the total contents of calcium and phosphorus are within the recommended range.
